Book Box Charity Corn Roast
Hi Everyone! This successful fundraising (and fun!) event took place on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Island Arabians Farm, Saanich, BC. Click the link below to see a selection of photos from the Corn Roast.
We earned over $40,000! All of this money has already been sent to Mufindi, Tanzania as their coffers were nearing empty! Every cent will be used.
There were 70 donations for the silent auction. Sandra Wiggins rallied the generous vendors in the town of Sidney. As well several individuals from the community donated stunning artwork. Kent Laforme, sculpture artist, Cliff Higano, wood carving artist and Bernadette Mertens-McAllister, painter were among the supportive artisans. Many volunteers and directors of the Charity worked tirelessly. Jo Hadfield and her daughter-in-law Melanie spent days planning the flawless silent auction and then Jo became "Julia Child" to auction off her cooking talents. Stephanie Broughton, portrait photographer captured precious moments that "sparkled" throughout the event.
Even during these difficult economic times Canadians of Saanich, Vancouver Island were open to the stories of less fortunate people from Mufindi, Tanzania. The Corn Roast seemed to take place under a "little cloud of goodness" that hovered over the farm. The funds generated will be multiplied Tanzania. Every cent of support will reach the community there. It was an event to touch the spirit.
Thank-you to everyone who came out and contributed by having fun.
Ruth & Anne

The Original Invitation & Event Description
HELLO EVERYONE !
No, this message is not coming from Tanzania this time(the generator is working around the clock here in Canada) BUT it is a message ABOUT Tanzania! Anne and I, the African Children's Bookbox Charity personnel and lots of kind volunteers would like to invite you to a Corn Roast here at the James Farm August 29/09 !!!
Please think of coming. It is going to be a wonderful occasion. There will be a Beef barbeque, piles of corn on the cob (prepared by Don James and Terry Pearson, a band "Shaky Ground", a silent/live auction, African crafts, and our own amazing art section! Kent Laforme, sculpture artist, donated a stunning stone elephant for our live auction. Bernadette Mertens McAllister, an artist, has created whimsical pieces using our photographs and memorabilia brought back from Tanzania. Anne Boquist is creating gourde art. There are exquisite small batiks and Tinga tinga paintings by Tanzanian artists. Linda Parker, a quilting artist, has quilted small batiks stitched on chic handbags.Oh, and there will be the odd miscellaneous Harley article. The vendors of Saanich are being most generous too.
Sounds delightful ?........it will be!
We would like you all to know that 100% of the profits will go to the Charity. Our website photo albums show the commitments: storybooks, Kiswahili textbooks, classroom and library construction, support of "Bibi's" grandmothers caring for Aids orphans, ongoing orphanage overhead (there are now 27 children) "Uji" a maize based porridge served to 545 students at Igoda school four days a week etc.etc. Most people in Tanzania only eat one meal a day, malnutrition is rampant. Our help does make a difference!!!
Please let me know how many tickets I can set aside for you. An RSVP also greatly helps with our "amateur" event planning. It is going to be Great Fun!
Include all your friends and family in the invitation, of course. For tickets or questions please email cornroast@africanbookbox.org
